Oately Academy

Working on a class in a new school. Can't say that I would have thought I'ld be taking an art class again, but hey. I've never learned storytelling and listening to these classes has been a pleasure. Chris Oatley is the best. Lora Iness is a gem. Their advice has been great and I've been incorporating new techniques and haven't really even touched the computer for art for this project for them. That feels wonderful actually. Lots of sketches and ideas going on. More to follow.

Keeping Art Alive

This may be true of the fine art world, but  I would say that the illustrators, specifically, storytellers are keeping art alive, because art is to communicate, edify, inspire- Norman Rockwell anyone? I've seen his paintings before at a museum exhibit. The most beautiful paintings that I have seen in my life. I've been to the Louve. Some of them were really beautiful at the Louve, but none as dynamic and touching and universal as Rockwell's. His techniques were wonderful to watch as they changed over the years he painted. The beginning of the exhibit had his very first paintings and continued on with more beautiful and complex pieces later. The warmth was amazing- the feeling infused in his dynamic color and composition. Gestures were so very human. They had a book they were selling that had all the paintings from the exhibit, but they captured the color in the paintings so poorly that I didn't even buy it. Such a shame. I really wanted to keep something from it, but not being allowed to take pictures in the exhibit was a bit limiting. So sad that collectors in China are taking so many of his works away from America. Rockwell's work is one of our national treasures.
